Guntur: The police on Friday foiled an octagenarian’s bid to bury self in his own farm land at Gannavaram village under Macherla mandal of Guntur district. According to police, Thatireddy Lachi Reddy, 80, dug a 10-foot-grave with an iron cover to close it after going into it. But, the locals advised him not to do so and said that self-burying is equal to committing suicide.

However, the elderly man wrote a letter to the Collector seeking permission for self-burial. But the Collector forwarded his letter to Macherla police, who conducted counselling to elderly man. The septuagenarian claimed that he is ending his life following orders by God.

The police released him after taking a promise that he would not repeat such attempts. The police also counselled Lachi Reddy's son and his family members.

Macherla rural CI T Dilip said Lachi Reddy was deeply involved in spirituality, attending bhajans and spiritual meetings for some time. He worships Gods and his wife died some time ago. “We advised his son and grandson that they would be held responsible if Lachi Reddy tries to bury himself again,” the CI said. Meanwhile, Lachi Reddy said, "My son and grandson are settled in life. What else is there for me to do here.”
