Tirupati: To encourage the residents to use of Ganesh idols made up of clay, Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) Commissioner V Vijay Rama Raju has directed the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB), MCT and Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) to distribute 20,000 clay Ganesh idols at free of cost to city residents for the ensuing Vinayaka Chavithi festival to be held on September 13.

Vijay Rama Raju held a meeting with the Tirupati Varasidhi Vinayaka Utsava Committee (TVVUC) leaders led by its convener Samanchi Srinivas here on Tuesday. This time, the MCT officials have decided to conduct Vinayaka Chavithi festival in an eco-friendly manner. In the meeting, the Corporation Commissioner emphasised on creating awareness among the public over the usage of clay Ganesha idols instead of Plaster of Paris and plastic decoration items.

The civic chief instructed the officials to prepare an action plan for immersion of Ganesh idols at Vinayaka Sagar Tank and fixed the deadline as September 12th for completion of immersion arrangements at the tank. Vijaya Rama Raju informed the cops to give permission for idols below the height of 10 feet only, if anybody violates the rules then they should be punished with penalty.

Vijay Rama Raju instructed the Excise officials to announce Ganesh immersion day as dry day and prevent unauthorised sale of liquor in the city. The civic body chief directed the MHO to arrange few emergency medical teams at the Vinayaka Sagar and asked the 108 staff to put up few ambulances very near to tank on September 15.

TUDA Chairman G Narasimha Yadav gave a call to the public to use eco-friendly clay idols for the protection of environment and asked the officials to conduct contest for schoolchildren on making clay Ganesh idols on the occasion of Vinayaka Chavithi festival.

The police officials asked the TVVUC leaders to submit the list of volunteers, who would be attending the immersion rally so that special identity cards can be issued to them. On behalf of the TVVUC, Samanchi Srinivas requested the officials to give a suitable accommodation beside the TUDA office for setting up the TVVUC office. In the review meeting, TUDA secretary Madhavi Latha, Irrigation EE Naga Bhushanam, MCT ME Chandrashekar and other officials were present.
