Srikakulam: Srikakulam district is having good water resources like Vamsadhara, Nagavali, Bahuda, Mahendrathanaya rivers and number of tributaries, rivulets, streams. But the residents of urban areas are not getting required quantity of protected drinking water every day.

As per the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPEO) norms, every person needs 135 litres of water every day. But in Srikakulam city, Itchapuram, Palasa, Amudalavalasa municipalities and Palakonda, Rajam nagara panchayats, 135 litres of water is not being supplied to each person as per CPEO guidelines.

At present Srikakulam city and Amudalavalasa town are better in supplying water nearer to the CPEO guidelines every day to each person. In Srikakulam city per day for per head 126 litres of water was being supplied. In Amudalavalasa town regularly each person was getting 123 litres of water for their needs.

In Itchapuram, the residents are getting only 75 litres of water per day per head. In Palasa town, each person was getting only 66 litres of water. In Palakonda, only 63 litres of water was being supplied per head per day. In Palakonda each person can get only 63 litres of water per day. In Rajam, only 69 litres of water was being supplied to each person.

Total population in all six towns is 3,52,872 and total 3,60, 30,000 litres of water was being supplied to all every day. Average quantity of water being supplied to each person in all six urban bodies is 102 litres which is lower than the required target of 135 litres.

“At present, water supply was good to some extent in Srikakulam and Amudalavalasa town, but situation was not good in Itchapuram, Palasa, Palakonda, Rajam”, Public health wing superintending engineer BH Srinivasa Rao told The Hans India.
