Amaravati: Arrears of taxes to the tune of Rs 6,428 crore need to be collected by different government departments. Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu held a review meeting with the officials belonging to various departments on Tuesday at the Secretariat and directed them to collect the revenue arrears.
“This is a huge amount and will certainly help the State government execute various development projects as well as implement welfare programmes,” he said.
Pending arrears which need to be collected by various departments include Rs 1209 crore by the revenue department (NALA), Rs 1,264 crore by the Commercial taxes, Rs 776 crore through Stamps and Registrations, Rs 487 crore from Mines and Geology and Rs 411 crore from Labour department.
The Finance Minister directed officials concerned to collect the dues as early as possible. He questioned the officials about the reasons behind the delay in collecting the taxes. The Minister pointed out that the collection of arrears would provide a great relief to the government. Officials pointed out that some taxpayers were not paying taxes and filing cases in courts.
Responding to the issue, Ramakrishnudu suggested to officials to go for One Time Settlement (OTS) plan in such cases. He said that the OTS will be a suitable solution for many such cases and government will get good revenue. It will be a win-win situation for both tax payers and government.
Before that, the officials were directed to prepare detailed reports on the pending taxes district-wise and department wise. Based on the information the officials will categorise the taxpayers. Meanwhile, Ramakrishnudu directed Ravichandra, Secretary to Finance Department, to write letters to all the Ministers and secretaries to collect the pending amount.
The State government issued Amaravati bonds for an amount of Rs 2000 crore, recently. Collection of revenue dues of Rs 6,428 crore would help the government to utilise funds for capital construction, a senior official of the Finance department said.
