Vijayawada: A 16th century pilgrim shelter which was called Desantara Mandapam was seen in utter neglect and needs to be protected on a priority basis, said Dr E Sivanagi Reddy, CEO, Cultural Centre of Vijayawada and Amaravati (CCVA) here on Monday.

Dr Reddy visited the 16 pillared Mandapam built for the footpathers heading to Tirumala hills on the northern bund of Anaswany tank at Venkatapuram village on Karakambadi - Tirupati Road, as part of the scheme ‘Preserve Heritage for Posterity’ launched by the CCVA.

He observed that the Mandapam representing the Vijayanagara Style of Architecture is threatened by negligence of its maintenance.

He appealed the officials of the State Department of Archaeology and Museums and TTD to safeguard the 400-year-old Mandapam for posterity by engaging experienced archaeological and heritage conservationists.

Prof Peta Srinivasulu Reddy, Department of Telugu, SV University said that the Mandapam served as resting place for the devotees visiting Tirumala Hills by foot until early 20th century.
