Monumental PS building demolished

Chittoor: The municipal authorities have demolished the 60-year-old monumental building on late Thursday night which used to house I Town police station.

However, civic officials have carried out building demolition with secrecy in the night to avoid resistance from opposition parties and other social organisations. There are allegations that 100-year-old Gandhi Statue, Indian Red Cross Society building, shopping complexes in municipal bus station were demolished a year ago at the behest of ruling party leaders.

The District Police Officers Association opposed the proposal of demolishing the police station building. The opposition party leaders alleged Chittoor MLA D A Satya Prabha was behind demolition of monumental structures in the city.

Speaking to The Hans India, Mayor Hemalatha said police station building was demolished after taking permission from the District SP. She stated police station building was demolished to set up a Statue Island near Gandhi statue.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who visited Chittoor recently, had instructed the authorities concerned to develop Chittoor on par with Tirupati. She ruled out a political angle for demolition of police station building.

The Mayor said I Town police station was shifted to new premises. She appreciated MLA Satya Prabha for striving hard to beautify Chittoor city.
Asked to comment on the demolition of monumental buildings in the city, YSRCP district convener J Srinivasulu said that the TDP would suffer a humiliating defeat in the next elections as the party is encouraging demolition of monumental buildings.
