Tirupati: Swine flu returns to the temple town this season and reportedly claimed a life in Tirupati which may be the first death in the state this year. Panic gripped with the news of swine flu spreading in the town, though the officials and doctors maintaining that the situation was well under control.

The figures reveal that significantly a less number of cases have been registered this year than the previous year, but the death of an aged woman, who was admitted to the SVIMS hospital on September 22 with the symptoms of the disease, alerted everyone concerned making them to take all precautionary steps.

From January to September 2017, there were 232 swine flu cases registered in Chittoor district, whereas only nine cases were registered during the same period this year. Of them, only six cases were tested positive of H1N1 virus during the last week.

District Medical and Health Officer Dr B Ramagiddaiah told The Hans India that a person living in Bengaluru for the last five years approached doctors in the SVIMS hospital with symptoms of fever, cold and cough. After treatment, he was cured and discharged.

Another woman admitted on September 22 died after battling for life for five days. However, besides swine flu, she has suffered from multiple organ failure and could not survive, he said.

Three patients were being treated at SVIMS keeping them under observation at isolated ward. Of them one was a doctor. These cases were reported from GD Nellore, SR Puram and Tirupati urban mandals in the district.

Since the district has border with Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, there will be always inflow of commuters. Also, being a pilgrim centre, Tirupati attracts people from across the country. The migrated population was also high in Tirupati. All these contribute to the spreading of the disease.

In view of these factors, the officials have been taking various steps to prevent swine flu from spreading by creating awareness among the people. The entire team of medical officers and staff were engaged in preventive steps and to effectively control H1N1 virus, the DMHO said.

“We have been educating the people and alerted the PHCs as well that if they find any symptoms immediately the patient should be taken to SVIMS or Ruia hospital. People should maintain cleanliness and must ensure that no water is stagnated anywhere which may cause mosquito breeding,” DMHO added.
