Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) Chairman M T Krishnababu said the port’s capacity has been increased to 120 MTs with 27 fully operated berths and several projects are in progress to improve the capacity further and to provide better services to customers.

Speaking to media here on Thursday, he said the port would celebrate its 85th Foundation Day on October 7. Explaining the port history and its developmental activities, Krishnababu said the port was established in 1933 by the Britishers with two lakh tonnes capacity per year. Stating the port handled 63.5 million tonnes of cargo for 2017-18, he said it has set a target of 67 MT for the present fiscal.

The inner harbour with 21 berths would be capable of handling vessels of draft up to 14.5 metres and 80,000 tonnes and the outer harbour with 6 berths would be capable of handling vessels of draft up to 18.1 metres and two lakh tonnes.

In addition, the single point mooring is capable of handling very large crude carriers of 2.5 lakh tonnes, the Chairman informed. The VPT was one of the leading major ports in India on the east coast that has been rendering service to the nation by serving major economic sectors like steel, power, petroleum, mining and fertilizer besides container services, he added.

The Chairman said the port has decided to celebrate Foundation Day on October 7 in a big way for completing 85 years of its operation by taking up various activities. He said the port would be allowed for public and high school and college students for three days from October 6-8 to explain about cargo handling operations in the harbour.
