Visakhapatnam: Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), the recognised trade union of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, has appealed to the management to open the retail sales outlets in the city to benefit the steel consumers in the North Andhra Region.

It is for the first time in the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant's history, that a proposal mooted for establishment of a retail sales counters in the city. The CITU leaders pointed out that when the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) Visakh Refinery and Visakha Dairy, the second largest milk business establishment, selling their products directly from retail outlets, why can't the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant open retail sales counters?

The steel plant during the past 6-years has invested huge money and created world-class infrastructure to increase its production from 3 mt to 6.2 mt and soon the plant is going to produce 7.2 mt of steel. As part of the expansion, the VSP management is taking several business plans and strengthening the distributors to ensure more steel sales. In fact, there is no Maximum Retail Price (MRP) on the steel products.

The distributors are fixing their own price according to the demand and supply. Currently, at an average, one tonne of steel is being sold at Rs 43,000 which is Rs 40,000 at the plant. As there are no retail counters, the steel consumers and steel plant officers and employees are purchasing the steel by paying as per the distributor price. "Visakhapatnam Steel Plant is having huge extent of lands at various locations.

The steel plant is having over 21 acres of land located at HB Colony near Seethammadhara in the city. Eyeing on the prime lands worth of Rs 500 crore, some private parties have mooting various plans and projects to gain the advantages of lands. Along with three other trade unions, a team consisting of Director (Commercial), Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Prabir Raychaudhury discussed about the retail sales outlets at HB Colony and another unit at the adjacent to RTC Complex of Kurmannapalem on the highway.

“The management positively responded on the proposal," J Ayodhyaramu, president of recognised trade union of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, told The Hans India. The management has agreed to open the first retail outlet at HB Colony, informed Director (commercial) and added the management has already applied to GVMC for commercial utilisation of HB Colony land. Once the GVMC approve the proposal, the retail outlet would be started, Ayodhyaramu said.
