Nellore: Not only in Vijayawada and other important cities across the State, now Nellore city is also having Air-Conditioned (AC) bus shelter for the commuters, who can heave sigh of relief during the scorching heat conditions in the coming summer.
Civic body has almost completed construction of an AC bus shelter at Gandhi Statue Centre which is crucial for movement of passengers, who commute towards many places. The civic body had also planned to construct such 8 AC bus shelters soon in city in the coming months with Rs. 8.5 lakh each.
These swanky facilities are new to the city population. Officials said these luxury shelters will have free Wi-Fi, mobile charging points and special room to women for feeding their kids. Officials are planning to inaugurate the shelter at Gandhi Statue shortly and others would be taken in phased manner spending around Rs 70 lakh, sources said.
In fact, the shelters in the city are in dilapidated condition and majority junctions have no such shelters. Commuters have to rely on private verandahs of the shops and shopping complexes during summer and also monsoon seasons.
Even though, there were plans to construct the shelters, officials waited for some funds under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). And, there has been no response from the industrial organisations. An official from the Corporation said that they had already placed requests before the industrialists in the district for constructing these shelters for convenience of the city population as part of their CSR activities.
In Andhra Pradesh, Vijayawada is the first city having AC bus shelters and there are proposals for such structures in Kakinada city too. Municipal Administration department is having plans to extend the facility in all important towns across the State as part of making them smart.
