Vijayawada: As many as 493 swimmers participated in the 20th edition of 1.5 km swimming competition in River Krishna organised jointly under the aegis of Aqua Devils Welfare Association (ADWA) and MP Gokaraju Gangaraju on Sunday.

The swimming competition was inaugurated by Police Commissioner Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao near the Durga Ghat on the southern of Prakasam Barrage. Swimmers from the age 5 to 83 years participated in the competition.

Speaking on the occasion, ADWA president KS Ramachander Rao said that 493 swimmers participated in the competition under various categories of different age groups ranging between 5 to 10 years, 11 to 15 years, 16 to 30 years, 31 to 45 years, 46 to 60 years and 61 and above.

He said that the competition was held successfully under the supervision of experienced swimmers.

Thirty boats with life jackets, plastic ropes and medical aid were deployed in the river as a precautionary measure to safeguard the swimming participants, he added.
