Srikakulam: The State government has decided to establish research centre at Palasa to study on chronic kidney diseases (CKD) in all seven Uddanam mandals.
On ad-hoc basis, the government arranged a research centre at VIMS hospital in Visakhapatnam which has been attracting a lot of criticism from all quarters as it is 250 km away from Uddanam.
At last the government decided to set up research centre at Palasa for effective study on the ailment. The government named it as Institute of Kidney Research Innovation and Patient Assistance (IKRIAPA).
Government conducted a survey with health experts on CKD in Uddanam from January 19, 2017 and identified 13,093 are suffering from the disease severely.
From 1996 onwards, many noted medical institutions and expert teams had been conducting studies in the area to know the root cause for rampant spread of CKD in Uddanam. Water, soil, air particles also tested by various teams in all these seven mandals.
Doctors of Sompeta, Dr Pradhana Sivaji and Dr Yaradi Krishna Murthy noticed the severity of CKD in Uddanam 25 years ago and they took assistance of Andhra Medical College experts from Visakhapatnam.
With Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan’s visit in Uddanam area in 2016, the State government alerted and launched preventive steps. “A counseling center already established at Palasa government hospital on CKD,” said district coordinator for health services (DCHS) B Surya Rao to The Hans India.
“Expert doctors and staff will be shifted to Palasa hospital soon to study on CKD where it will run temporarily apart from the existing counselling centre,” district medical and health officer Dr M Chenchayya told this newspaper.
