Guntur: Glaucoma is the second prominent cause of blindness in the world accounting up to 8 per cent of total blindness.

In India, glaucoma is the third leading cause of irreversible blindness with nearly 12 million people affected and nearly 1.2 million people blind from the disease, said Dr TV Sulochana Rani, glaucoma specialist at Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, Guntur.

She said that World Glaucoma Awareness Week is observed from March 8 to 14 and the theme for the current year is (B-I-G) Beat Invisible Glaucoma.

She said that early detection of glaucoma is the only solution to ensure further damage that could lead to irreversible blindness.
