Vijayawada: If a woman loses 20-week pregnancy three times in a row, it could be described as recurrent pregnancy loss or habitual abortion, said noted gynaecologist Dr K Prabhadevi while addressing the weekly health education programme at Vasavya Nursing Home with Dr G Samaram in the chair here on Saturday.

The gynaecologist said that women need not worry over the recurrent pregnancy loss as the latest medical procedures were available to avoid abortions.

She said that generally 15 per cent of women suffer abortion. However, without any tangible reason abortion takes place within 20 weeks of pregnancy, she said.

This type of habitual abortions occurs only among 1 to 2 per cent of women, the gynaecologist said. “Generally, there would not be any specific reason for habitual abortion in 45 to 50 per cent of women,” she averred.

Hormone deficiency may be reason in 17 to 20 per cent of the cases, auto immune disorder may be the reason in about 20 per cent of women and the deficiency in the formation of uterus in 2 to 5 per cent of women, or infection may be the reason in 1 to 5 per cent of women.

If the husband is above 40 years, there may be disorder in chromosome of sperm which may cause abortion.

Abortion is also common among women with thyroid problem, diabetics out of control, and women with blood-related disease thrombophilia, or obese women.

Hysteroscopy helps to find out the real reason behind abortions and chromosome disorder could be detected through genetic test.

If there is a hormone deficiency, tests of thyroid, prolactin test, and blood sugar tests could be conducted, she said.

She underlined the importance of genetic counseling. Methods like IVF, donor gametes or surrogacy could be adopted for pregnancy.

The specialist said that there were many modern methods of treatment available for the women who face recurrent pregnancy loss. Dr Maru proposed a vote of thanks.
