McLaren will not go cheap. McLaren has dismissed the possibility of launching its cheapest model, the 540C.
McLaren has dismissed the possibility of launching its cheapest model, the 540C. The entry-level Sports Series coupe was designed with Chinese buyers in mind, sharing the same 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine as the 570S but detuned to produce 522 horsepower rather than 562 ponies.
The 540C is said to be fully compliant with US safety guidelines, but Canada will likely be its only market in North America. "We are undecided at the moment," McLaren spokesperson JP Canton told Autoguide.
"Essentially the car will be homologation for the U.S., but it is highly unlikely we will import it." The 540C will sell for $196,500 CAD (~$160,680 USD) when it arrives in the provinces. US buyers will have to pony up a bit more for the 570S, which fetches $184,900.
McLaren fans in the US should not wait around for a cheaper model to slot below the 570S, as the company has rejected the idea of any further downmarket push for its carbon-clad performance machines. Even without a cheaper model, the British automaker expect annual sales to easily jump from 1,600 units to 4,000 units by 2017.
