Another fatal accident hit Dakar Rally in South America. On Saturday 9, a spectator was killed after he was hit by French pilot Lionel Baud’s car during the seventh stage from Uyumi in Bolivia to Salta in northwest Argentina.

Organizers stated that ‘An accident occurred at kilometer number 82 during the race on Bolivian soil, where auto competitor Lionel Baud hit a 63 years old man who was isolated on the track. The organization medical services could only confirm the victim’s death.

This 38th edition of Dakar Rally had already been marked by an accident that occurred during the prologue from Buenos Aires. Chinese team members, Guo Meiling, and Min Liao, had run off the track and caused injury to 10 people, including 3 seriously.

The Dakar Rally, formerly known as the ‘Paris-Dakar Rally’ is an annually off-road endurance race, properly called ‘rally raid’, organized by French Amaury Sport Organization, which also organizes ‘Tour de France’ cycling race occasion. Because of its high mortality rates, the rally has received criticism and even the Vatican Paper described the auto event as ‘the bloody race of irresponsibility’. Since 1970, 70 people died including 42 non-competitors as a result of the Dakar rally.
