BMW has confirmed that it will be expanding its ‘i’ range with the introduction three new models – an open-top i8 Roadster, an extended range all-electric i3 and an all-new model called i NEXT.

BMW has confirmed that it will be expanding its ‘i’ range with the introduction three new models an open-top i8 Roadster, an extended range all-electric i3 and an all-new model called i NEXT.

In 2018, the i8 will get a drop-top sibling, called i8 Roadster, a version of which was revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in January, as the BMW i Vision Future Interaction concept.

Following the success of the i8 coupé, the i8 Roadster was an inevitable next step. Its engine and performance figures are sure to echo the coupé's, which uses a three-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol engine alongside the electric motor. It makes 357bhp, has a 0-100kph time of 4.4sec and a top speed of 250kph.

A new BMW i3 in both pure electric and range-extender forms have also been announced, with a revised design and battery capacity increased by 50 percent. The car is also expected to get better electronics and software to further boost its range. The all-new 'i' model confirmed by BMW, called the i NEXT, is set to be launched in 2020.
