Electric Two Wheeler exemptions may go

If the group of state transport ministers recommendation are accepted, electric bikes/scooters exemptions may go. Currently, category of e-bikes and e-scooters are exempted from motor vehicle act (MVA) hence the e-vehicle customers don’t need a license nor the mandatory registration to drive on the public roads. However this is all set to change, as the group of ministers has recommended amending the act to make all two-wheeler vehicles irrespective of its fuel whether petrol/electric under the “vehicle” category.

If amended as suggested the benefits will go away automatically and e-two wheeler owners can be penalized as per the MVA like any other two wheeler rider.

At the moment, E-vehicles are falling under the category of 250 watts and with a maximum speed of 25kmph are t is exempted from the Central Vehicles registration act by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and does not require any registration or license. This enables customers to own the e-vehicles without any hassle of registration and seen as an alternative transport for fair sex, old people and teenage-kids.

The group of ministers also suggests strict action against two wheeler riders who drive their vehicle without helmet in a bid to control the ever increasing road fatalities in India
