Demand was subdued in May while promises of a good monsoon should see sales accelerate in the months ahead. Honda Motorcycles & Scooters India (HMSI) reported increase in market share by 2%. The company registered 19% growth during May 2016 with a total of 4,36,358 units sold. Domestic sales increased by 18% to 4,15,902 units with motorcycle sales at 1,47,479 units and scooter sales at 2,68,423 units.

Exports during the month increased 48% and stood at 20,456 units. The company recently added 2016 editions of Dio and Activa-i in new colors and upgrades while 5 new Best Deal outlets in Varanasi, Ghaziabad, Bareilly, Karimnagar, and Nandyal were also opened.

Bajaj Auto Limited registered an increase of 1% in sales during May 2016. Total sales (including commercial vehicles) during the month stood at 3,47,655 units as against, 3,45,438 units sold in May 2015.

Motorcycle sales increased by 2% to stand at 3,07,344 units as compared to 3,01,862 units in May 2015. Sales of commercial vehicles dipped while total exports also fell 10% from 1,58,824 units exported in May 2015 to 1,43,421 units exported in the past month.

During May 2016, TVS Motor overall sales were up 11% as compared to sales in the same period of the previous month. Total sales in May 2016 stood at 2,43,783 units as compared to 2,20,079 units sold in May 2015. Domestic sales were up 17.9% from 1,75,533 units in May 2015 to 2,06,886 units in May 2016 while scooter sales increased 20.2% from 54,426 units in May 2015 to 96,485 units in May 2016.

India Yamaha Motors Pvt. Ltd., has registered growth to the extent of 36% in May 2016. Total domestic sales stood at 62,748 units as against 48,084 units sold in May 2015. Increased demand was noted for the company’s FZ series bikes while launch of the Saluto RX has also contributed to growth.

Royal Enfield registered growth of 37% in May 2016, but it was not due to the new Himalayan. In fact, Himalayan sales stood at below 500 units for the month. Royal Enfield sales for May 2016 stood at 48,604 units, while sales during May 2015 stood at 35,354 units. Exports were up 86% to 1,327 units.
