Mahindra may sell tractors, heavy duty trucks in South Africa

Scorpio failed the Global NCAP crash test with 0-star rating.Speaking to a South African publication, Dr. Pawan Goenka, Executive Director, Mahindra & Mahindra, reportedly stated that the Mahindra Scorpio for the country will have necessary safety items.

Responding to the query on the 0-star safety rating of the popular SUV in Global NCAP crash tests, the head honcho stated that the model tested was strictly for the domestic (Indian) market.

To recap, the low-end Scorpio failed the crash test. Global NCAP noted that the shell integrity of the SUV is unstable under impact (the video also show the front part of the roof crumble). Mahindra released a statement saying that the model tested was not equipped with airbags and majority of Scorpio customers buy airbag equipped variants. It also added that the Scorpio complies with the current Indian safety standards.

Dr. Goenka’s statement to Bdlive.co.za implies that even the base variant to be sold in South Africa will be equipped with dual airbags and ABS. The automaker recently launched the new KUV100 in the African nation and is gearing up to increase its portfolio there.

An earlier report suggested that Mahindra is also exploring the possibilities of selling tractors and heavy duty trucks in South Africa
