The deadline for installing speed governors is July 31, as there is a huge demand and a shortage of speed governors in the market.

The Maharashtra Transport Ministry is intent on reducing road casualties by planning to install Speed Governors on all tourist vehicles and buses, following which cars will also install the device. Maharashtra’s Transport Minister Diwakar Raote wants to make speed governors mandatory for school buses, tourist vehicles and also for passenger cars.

This came after the recent Mumbai-Pune express highway accident that claimed 17 lives journeying on a luxury bus. Speaking to the TOI, Minister Diwakar Raote said, “We are going to hold a meeting with all tourist bus operators in the next two weeks and will direct them to start installing speed governors."

Tourist buses will also have to limit their speed to 80 km/h, while State Transport BEST/MSRTC and commercial freight vehicles will be plying at 80 km/h. School buses will have to ply at a speed as low as 40 km/h. Vehicles that usually carry inflammable items as Kerosene, Petrol, Diesel or anything hazardous has to install a speed governor with a speed limit set to 60 km/h.
