The Maruti Alto has been dominating the sales chart in the Indian car market for several years and no doubt it has been a cash cow for the automaker but is it as healthy a cash cow as the new Toyota Innova Crysta? The answer is No.

The Indian car market’s mass segment is steadily witnessing a paradigm shift. Customers are no longer chasing prices when they go out to buy cars but instead demanding value along with lifestyle quotient.

The net effect of this new trend can be better understood by comparing the top 10 best selling cars in the market in terms of volume with best-selling cars in terms of value. The Toyota Innova Crysta which is ranked 8 in terms of volumes tops the value chart and the best selling Alto finds itself at 9th position in terms of value.

The value chart is arrived at by multiplying the volumes of the top 10 best selling cars in July with the models’ respective top-end variant prices (60% of the customers are said to be opting for top-end variants and hence the logic). The values thus generated may not be very accurate but the pecking order is.

Maruti Dzire sub-4 sedan comes second while Hyundai Creta, Grand 10 and Elite i20 take the 3rd, 4th, and 5th positions respectively. The aforementioned cars make more money for their makers than the other volume oriented models such as the Maruti Swift, Wagon R, Maruti Baleno, Maruti Alto, and Renault Kwid.
