The Toyota Calya Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) has made its world debut at the going 2016 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). The budget people carrier will be positioned below the best selling Avanza in the archipelago.

Likely to be marketed as a more premium alternative to the Datsun Go+ Panca (the only other MPV to comply with Indonesia’s LCGC norms), the Calya is a production version of the Daihatsu UFC-3 Concept.

Needless to say, Daihatsu will have its own LCGC MPV on the same platform under the name Sigra. Unlike the Go+ Panca, the Calya has a proper compact MPV looks, thanks to the high stance.

The front fascia derives inspiration from the likes of Vios while the rear is very close to that of the new Innova Crysta with those L-shaped taillights. Inside, the dashboard design is fresh. A simple instrument console, silver accented steering wheel, dashboard mounted gear lever and an infotainment system on the centre console are the highlights. The MPV gets dual airbags, ABS with EBD, Bluetooth connectivity, rear power socket, and rear parking sensors.

The Toyota Calya is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine which complies with LCGC norms. Transmission options include 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic units. The motor is rated at 88 PS and 108 Nm of torque.

The Calya will be looking to become the new best seller for Toyota in the MPV loving Indonesian market.
