The next generation VW Jetta is currently under development but it will not be sold in India. Volkswagen is reportedly planning to wrap up the nameplate in the sub-continent as and when the current model runs out of stock.

The primary reason for the decision to pull the plug on the new Jetta is its price. The current gen model itself is pricier compared to its rivals in India and the next iteration is set to be even more upmarket.

Considering that SUVs and MPVs outwitted the entry level D-sedan segment in India, an expensive offering in a rapidly shrinking market doesn’t make a strong business case. Clearly, the INR 15-25 lakh segment now belongs to high-riding vehicles which offer good road presence and additional seating capacity compared to a premium sedan.

VW India has been struggling to sell the current Jetta in decent numbers. Last year, the sedan clocked sales of 1,940 units in the country which is marginal compared to the segment leader Toyota Corolla Altis’ tally of 6,506 units. Even the Skoda Octavia registered sales of 2,675 units during the same period.

VW is gearing up to establish a presence in the promising Indian SUV market in the coming years. The 7-seat version of the Tiguan which is expected to be launched here next year will be very important for the brand.
