American motorcycle manufacturer UM Motorcycles launched its entry-level Renegade range of cruisers in India at the 2016 Auto Expo in February this year. The company also started bookings for the Renegade Commando and the Renegade Sport S models, which are priced at Rs 1.59 lakh and Rs 1.49 lakh, respectively. After that, it started opening dealerships in various cities across the country and the count has reached six now after the latest showroom inaugurated today in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. The dealership is located at Govind Marg, Janta Colony, Jaipur. What's interesting is that the dealership sits close to the store of its biggest rival -- the Royal Enfield -- and many other major bike manufacturers.
It seems that UM Motorcycles aims to attract the customers of other motorcycle brands by opening its dealerships close to shops owned by other major manufacturers. The company is also planning to start bookings for its flagship Renegade Classic by the end of this year. The new updates suggest that the Classic model will come with features like EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) and ABS (Anti-lock Braking System).
The tentative waiting period for new bookings of the UM Renegade cruisers is around four months and the company is planning to open more dealerships in the coming months. All the three motorcycles introduced in the UM Renegade range are based on one platform, with the only difference between them being cosmetic changes. The bikes are powered by a 279cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that has been tuned to develop 24.8PS of maximum power at 8,500rpm and a peak torque of 21.8Nm at 7,000 rpm. However, these figures might vary in the upcoming Classic model because of the EFI. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox, which will come in handy while cruising on the highway.
Besides that, the Renegade cruisers come loaded with features like fat tyres, front disc brake, beefy 41mm front forks, side LED lights for 360-degree visibility, digital speedometer, USB charging port and under-seat storage space. Currently, UM Motorcycles is manufacturing these models at its business venture partner Lohia Motors’ manufacturing facility in Kashipur, Uttarakhand. The company aims to sell around 3,000 units per month, with 25 dealerships to be set up by the end of the year. However, the company could also invest in its own manufacturing facility later depending on the market response for its bikes.
