Volkswagen’s diesel engine never fails to make headlines. After crawling out of the dieselgate controversy, it was expected to feature on the company’s first India-specific offering – the Ameo– on Tuesday. But the launch has now been pushed back indefinitely.

“Due to unavoidable circumstances, today's announcement from Volkswagen stands cancelled. We will keep you posted on next steps,” said one of the company’s representatives in a statement. Since the cancellation of the event took place at the eleventh hour, we expect it to take place in the near future.

In its petrol avatar, the Volkswagen was launched a few months back. The car was priced aggressively at Rs 5.31 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base variant. The diesel variant had beenspotted testing on several occasions in the months that followed.

As mentioned earlier, the diesel version of the car will be powered by the 1.5-litre TDI engine that can churn out 104PS of power and 230Nm of torque. Power is expected to be transmitted to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox. In this configuration, the powertrain is set to return a fuel efficiency of 22kmpl, as per ARAI figures.

We had also reported recently, that the bookings of the diesel Ameo had kick-started ahead of the sedan’s launch. And customers can still book the car by paying a token amount of Rs 10,000 at dealerships across Mumbai.

As for the launch date, we expect to hear soon from the manufacturer and will keep you posted on the same.
