India’s SUV space has been brimming with options of late as every manufacturer is trying to make the most of India’s increasing inclination to buy bigger cars. Falling in line, Hyundai Motors India Ltd plugged the gap in its portfolio by launching the Tucson, which slots between the Creta and the Santa Fe, on Monday. And the company is now eyeing to bring the car in its AWD avatar to Indian shores by April next year.

The Tucson is offered with an all-wheel drive in Australia currently; and we expect the same to be carried over to India. Down under, only the diesel variant of the car is equipped with the AWD, so petrol buyers with AMT aspirations would have to look elsewhere.

This brings us to the competition, which the Tucson mainly faces from the Honda CR-V. The Japanese SUV offers a four-wheel drive under its hood along with the 2.4-litre petrol mill. Priced at Rs 26.37 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the CR-V has been mildly popular in its AWD avatar, as the Tucson will aim to steal its thunder.

Hyundai also revealed that its latest SUV in the Indian market will be offered with additional features to make it a more attractive proposition in the segment. These could include a fancy panoramic sun-roof and elegant all-black interiors. Money-wise, the car could command a premium, slightly north of the top-end diesel Tucson (click here for detailed pricing).
