Maruti is all set to step into the mini crossover segment with the much-awaited Ignis in the coming weeks. Our sources have confirmed that the automaker will launch the Ignis around mid January (probably January 13 or 15). The Mahindra KUV100 will be its primary rival and we expect Maruti to price it in the vicinity of Rs 5 lakh. Here’s what we know about the Ignis.

Variants, Colour Options and Accessories

The Ignis will be the entry level car selling from Maruti’s Nexa range of dealerships and will come with similar variant names as the Baleno and the S Cross. The petrol variants will be Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha; diesel will skip Sigma and will have Delta, Zeta and Alpha. It will have nearly six colour options and, perhaps considering the popularity of the dual-tone variants of the Vitara Brezza, Maruti will offer the same with the Ignis as well. The dual-tone options in the Ignis will be offered with the range-topping trims and will include blue-white or red-black options. Moreover, the Ignis will also feature iCreate customisation packages similar to the Vitara Brezza.

Mechanicals

The Ignis will share its engine options – i.e., the 1.2-litre petrol and the 1.3-litre DDiS190 diesel – with the Baleno. A five-speed manual will come as standard with the Ignis. Like its European counterpart, the Ignis will offer an automatic option – five-speed automated manual transmission – in India as well. Interestingly, though the AMT will be offered with both the engine options (petrol and diesel), it can be had only with the mid trims – Delta and Zeta. The AMT unit in the Ignis will be the same Magneti Marelli one found in the rest of the Marutis. The Mahindra KUV100, on the other hand, doesn’t offer an AMT/automatic option.
