​Hanamkonda: Telangana Legislative Assembly Speaker S Madhusudhana Chary has claimed that his time on Kakatiya University as a student had immense impact on his life.

He revealed that when he joined the university, he intended to take teaching as profession but campus life has steered him towards a different path and thus joined politics.

The Speaker has on Tuesday attended the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the English Department of the University.

Marking the occasion, alumni meet was organised on the day, which coincided with the superannuation of the department head K Damodar Rao. Addressing the gathering, Speaker Madhusudhana Chary turned nostalgic remembering his campus days.

Describing universities as the temples of modern India, he wished that abundant youth power in the country has to be utilised for development of the State and the nation.

The department Head, Damodar Rao presented a detailed account of department during the last 50 years and said it has made long strides in its development. Kakatiya Journal of English Studies (KJES) was being published annually for the last 40 years and special issues on Rabindranath Tagore, Mulk Raj Anand and others were brought out.

To share their memories and affinity with the department, as many as 300 alumni members assembled in the senate hall of the university. Former students wanted the alumini meet to be an annual event.

Retired teachers of the department Prof K Indrasena Reddy, Prof P Mallikarjuna Rao, Prof M Rajagopalachari and Prof J Yellaiah were felicitated on the occasion. A souvenir of the department commemorating the Golden Jubilee Year was also released.
