Hyderabad: The State government has speeded the process of clearing the pending bills pertaining to BC and SC welfare scholarships.

According to official sources, government has released about Rs 200 crore in the month of January this year and the remaining amount of about Rs 250 crore is expected to be released before the end of March.The main reason for the delay was due to non submission of proper documents by the institutions.

The BC welfare department has received about seven lakh new applications till February 17, for the sanction of scholarships for the current financial year and the scrutiny for the same would begin in another one week’s time. The final list of eligible students for scholarships would take about two months time.

Taking previous experience into consideration, initial estimates of the total scholarship amount for the current financial year might touch about Rs 12,000 crore, the sources added. This would be paid in instalments spread into the ensuing financial year, the official said.

Similarly, out of the total amount of Rs 2,391 crore earmarked for the Schedule Cates, the government has already released Rs 1,968 crore towards clearing the pending scholarships till the 2015-16 financial year.So far, the department has cleared scholarship bills to the tune of Rs 1,700 crore, said a senior official from the Social Welfare department.

The SC Welfare Department too has received about 13 lakh applications towards grant of scholarships for the current financial year and finalisation of the same would be completed in two months time, the sources said.

Meanwhile, the newly proposed residential schools for SC, ST and BC categories admitting students in fifth to seventh standards would starting functioning from June 13.

The new residential schools were aimed at providing better standards of education for which arrangements are in full swing to commence classes. Nearly, 2 lakh students are expected to take admissions in the newly proposed schools, the officials said.
