While The Ford Gets Three Stars, The Chevy Gets None

Car crash tests are always eye-openers for the automotive industry. While there are specific crash test regulations devised for different countries, cars on sale in India have been tested at the Global NCAP’s (New Car Assessment Programme) common testing ground. In the latest set of results, and the first for 2017, the UK-based company has released the crash test reports for two India-made cars – the Chevrolet Enjoy and Ford Figo Aspire. Let’s have a look at how they performed.

Chevrolet Enjoy

The car to be tested was a base version, which doesn’t get any safety features such as airbags, ISOFIX anchorages or pretensioners in the front seatbelts. The overall crash result was disappointing for the American carmaker as it scored zero stars in adult-occupant safety and two stars for rear-seat child-occupant protection. Global NCAP reported that the car offered poor protection for the driver’s chest, head and knees. There is certainly nothing to enjoy about that result for Chevrolet.

Ford Figo Aspire

Apart from the extended boot in the Figo Aspire, both the Figo siblings are essentially the same car. The crash-tested car was the dual-airbag version of the Aspire and the same results apply to the Figo hatchback. The sub-4 metre sedan scored three stars for adult-occupant safety and two stars for rear-seat child-occupant protection. This result is better than the last time when Global NCAP tested the previous-gen Figo, which received zero stars for safety.

While Ford has come up the safety rating scale, GM’s Chevrolet must address the safety issues plaguing its compact-MPV in India. If safety tech is made a priority, cars built in India can easily receive better safety ratings. Recently, the Tata Zest was tested by Global NCAP and it received an overall score of four stars. Other cars that have scored four stars in crash test results include Toyota Etios (applies to the Liva as well) and the Volkswagen Polo.
