MUMBAI: Luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz India on Wednesday strengthened its SUV portfolio by launching a new variant of its volume grosser GLA Class at a price that's lower than up to 4 per cent from the pre-GST tag.

Mercedes-Benz India sales & marketing vice-president Michael Jopp said the vehicle is available for sale from Wednesday and the prices are uniform across the states following the introduction of the new uniform tax regime.

The SUV, which leads Mercedes's new generation cars (NGC) segment - which includes the A, B and GLA and CLA Class models - comes with a dynamic design, powerful appearance and is available in three engine variants - GLA 200, GLA 200 d and GLA 220 d 4 Matic.

Six airbags are a standard offering in all models.

The NGC is the automaker's biggest volume contributor, with over 13,000 units on the roads, and within the segment, the GLA Class leads in volume.

The new GLA Class, rolled out from the Chakan plant, is the seventh model launched this year, out of the dozen-plus planned for the year, Jopp said.

The 2-litre petrol model of the new five-seater GLA Class 200 d is priced at Rs 30.65 lakh and goes up to Rs 36.75 lakh, for the 2.2 litre 4 Matic variant.

The new GLA also comes with a service package that includes unlimited mileage warranty for Rs 49,000 for two years for the petrol models and Rs 63,000 for the diesel models.

"Ever since its launch in 2014, the GLA remains a key product in our portfolio as it has been an outright winner in its segment carving a special place for itself. The top of the line GLA 220 d 4MATIC comes with permanent all-wheel drive system," Jopp said.

From 2009, Mercedes started local assembly at Chakan near Pune. The 20,000 units per annum plant now rolls out nine models including the Maybach S 500, S-Class, E-Class, C-Class, CLA luxury sedans and the GLA, GLE and the GLS luxury SUVs.
