Bajaj recently announced a global partnership with Triumph to develop mid-capacity bikes ranging from 400cc-800cc. The segment is currently being dominated by Royal Enfield which sold 6,51,107 bikes in 2016-17 thereby posting a growth of 30 percent. Bajaj currently has only the Dominar 400 in that segment.

With the partnership being announced and having commenced the development of mid-capacity bikes, the very first bike from this partnership is at least 2-3 years away from now. Bajaj Auto, meanwhile, is readying a new facility closer to its existing Chakan facility.

The level of investments and capacity of the plant is said to be finalised in the next 6 months.

Triumph will be taking care of its existing 13 dealerships till the jointly produced bikes are ready and a year before the roll-out of these bikes, Bajaj will take over the Triumph network and start selling both mid-capacity bikes from the partnership as well as the high-end Triumph bikes via KTM dealerships. Bajaj also plans to increase the dealership network to at least 400 by then.

Under this partnership, Bajaj will market Triumph bikes and also supply spares in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Columbia and several parts of Africa. Similarly, markets like Europe, UK, Japan, New Zealand, Australia and some parts of Latin America will be managed by Triumph.
