Hyderabad: In a significant development, a consortium led by GMR Infrastructure Limited has won three construction packages of rail line doubling of Multi Modal Transport System (MMTS)- Phase II works on Secunderabad Division of South Central Railway. Recently, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited has issued the Letter of Award to the GMR consortium recently.

“The total contract is valued at approximately Rs 389 crore of which GMR’s share of work is about Rs 207 crore,” the infrastructure major said in a release.

GMR is the lead member of the consortium with Tata Projects and Kalindee Rail Nirman Ltd as the partner for OHE and Track works, S&T works respectively.

The work includes construction of roadbed, major and minor bridges, track-linking, outdoor signal & telecom (S&T) works, over head electrification (OHE), traction sub-station (TSS) and general electrical works for MMTS – Phase II on Secunderabad Division of SCR.

The project is scheduled to commence by middle of July 2014, with a completion period of 30 months.

“This is a testimony of our continuing interests in Railway projects, as we see a huge potential to upgrade the railway infrastructure in the country. This includes the Dedicated Freight corridor (DFC) and the upcoming high speed Railway projects, as recently announced by the government,” said BVN Rao, Business Chairman, Urban Infrastructure and Highways, GMR.

The infrastructure major had clinched its first railway project in March this year when a consortium led by it bagged doubling works of rail line between Jhansi and Bhimsen stations in Uttar Pradesh. The total contract was valued at about Rs 267 crore, of which GMR's share of work was about Rs 135 crore.

GMR Infrastructure, founded by G M Rao and based out of Bangalore, has interests in airports, energy, highways and urban Infrastructure sectors. It has successfully employed the public-private partnership model to build a portfolio of high quality assets. The company has 15 power generation assets, of which eight are operational and seven are under various stages of development.

In the highways sector, the group is operating seven road assets across the country. In the Airports sector, it developed and commissioned the Greenfield international airport, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), at Hyderabad. It also operates the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in New Delhi, where it has built a brand new integrated terminal T3. The group is also focusing on railway projects now.
