Hyderabad: The City of Pearls which is also known as bulk drug capital of India will soon have a state-of- the-art pharmaceutical hub with the Telangana government getting close to finalising finer details of the mega Pharma City which is likely to come up in 3,000 acres.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao announced plans for the exclusive Pharma City during his day long interaction with industry in July this year. Thereafter, the state government roped in the Bulk Drug Manufacturers’ Association (BDMA) to finalise the site and make suggestions on the other finer details of the proposed project which is likely to attract investments ranging from Rs 3,000 crore to Rs 5,000 crore.
“We want to take up the Pharma City with the full participation of the industry. We requested BDMA to identify a suitable land site for project. We have given them the list of land parcels available with the government. We will take up the project wherever the industry wants,” Jayesh Ranjan, Commissioner for Industries and Commerce, Telangana, told The Hans India.
Asked whether the existing pharma units would be shifted to the new location, he replied in negative, saying there was no such proposal. “It is up to the companies to shift their existing operations or put up new units. But the industrial park is for expansion activities of the existing companies. Besides, some global companies will set up their units there,” he said.
When contacted, P Eshwar Reddy, Executive Director, BDMA, said that the project proposals were still at a preliminary stage. “But we have visited some sites on the request of the government and submitted a report, suggesting a site in Medak district. The government will now take a final call after exploring the land availability there,” he explained.
According to him, the Pharma City would require around 3,000 acres of land. “We need that much of land for the project. Otherwise, the development costs would spiral. As per rough estimates, the project will require anywhere between Rs 1,000 crore to Rs 1,500 crore for development if we take the cost of exclusive power plant into consideration,” Reddy explained.
On investments, he said the pharmaceutical hub would attract investments ranging from Rs 3,000 crore to Rs 5,000 crore. “However, it is too early to estimate the number of units that will come up there. The plot sizes may vary from 5 acres to 50 acres depending on the size of the unit each company puts up. That way, it may accommodate 100 to 200 units,” he said.
