While Sensex closed 53 points up at 28,439 and Nifty ended 18 points higher at 8,494. However, broader markets outperformed with mid and small cap indices up 0.5 and 1 per cent respectively.
Trading witnessed choppy during Thursday trading session with investors adopting a cautious stance ahead of quarterly GDP data which is to be released on Friday and the much-awaited RBI's policy review next week.
According to the brokers, sustained capital inflows amid firm European cues also supported the positive trend of the market. Rise in Infosys, HUL, TCS, ICICI Bank, BHEL, M&M, Bajaj Auto, Dr Reddy's and Hindalco mainly drove Sensex higher
Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors were net buyers in Indian equities worth Rs 181.46 crore on Wednesday, according to stock exchange data. The major Sensex gainers: BHEL, up 4.35 per cent at Rs 283; Hindustan Unilever, up 2.71 per cent at Rs 789.15; Hindalco Inds, up 2.07 per cent at Rs 172.65; Tata Power, up 1.99 per cent at Rs 92.45; and Infosys, up 1.61 per cent at Rs 4,366.90.
The major Sensex losers: Bharti Airtel, down 1.91 per cent at Rs 385.85; Tata Steel, down 1.12 per cent at Rs 460.50; Sesa Sterlite, down 1.08 per cent at Rs 238.15; ONGC, down 0.91 per cent at Rs 382.20; and Larsen and Toubro, down 0.89 per cent at Rs 1,619.40.
Outlook
Closing session better
Nifty traded in a narrow range with zigzag movements and closed higher for the day. Further, short term trend continues to remain positive and stop loss may be continued at 8425 (on close basis). Nifty spot is expected to encounter resistance at 8535, 8570 and find support at 8455, 8420 for Friday. Global cues and funds flow are expected to guide the trade basing on present market. It may be expected to experience volatile / zigzag movements with subdued midsession and recovery in closing.– Dr B Amaranatha Sastry
