Hyderabad: Karnataka Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited (KMF), which markets fresh milk and milk-based products under Nandini brand, has turned aggressive in Telangana by launching special toned milk in the city at Rs 34 a litre, considered the lowest in the highly-competitive market.
The Bangalore-based federation which forayed into twin cities two months ago is also planning to set up a processing plant with an investment of Rs 40 crore. “Some private companies are making a killing by selling milk at Rs 40 to Rs 44 a litre which is higher by Rs 8 to Rs 10 a litre than our prices.
KMF is not for making profits. Our main objective is to make consumers and dairy farmers happy. That’s the reason why we have launched the special toned milk at Rs 34 in the market here,” P Nagaraju, Chairman, KMF, told The Hans India here on the sidelines of the launch event.
At present, the federation is selling 70,000 litres of fresh milk and 50,000 litres of long-shelf life milk daily in Hyderabad. With launch of the special toned milk, it expects the sales to go up in coming months. “We are confident that we will be able to increase our fresh milk sales to 2 lakh litres per day in two months,” he said.
KMF is using a third party processing plant at Mahabubnagar to cater to the city market. “We have entered into co-packaging arrangement with Rajeswari Dairy in Mahabubnagar. It has a well-equipped plant with 1 lakh litres per day capacity. Efforts are underway to increase the capacity to 2 lakh units,” Nagaraju explained.
He further said that KMF has been gearing up to set up its own processing plant near the city in a year or so. “As demand increases, we will set up new processing plant near Hyderabad with an investment of Rs 40 crore. It will have capacity of 5 lakh litres per day and generate around 400 jobs,” he maintained.
KMF which has presence in Chennai, Kerala and other parts of South India is currently procuring 72 lakh litres per day (LLPD). Of this, it markets 52 LLPD as fresh milk and the remaining quantity is used for milk-based products.
Last fiscal, the federation clocked a total turnover of Rs 9,000 crore, with a year-on-year growth of around 12 per cent. “Our target is to cross Rs 10,000 crore mark this year,” he added. On the expansion plans, he said KMF would enter into Mumbai and Pune markets within one month.
“We have already done marketing survery and we are ready to enter the two cities,” he said. Earlier unveiling the special toned milk, S Madhusudhana Chary, Speaker, Telangana Legislative Assembly, underlined the need for enhancing milk consumption in Telangana.
