Hyderabad: Smartron, a Hyderabad-based startup focused on Internet of Things (IoT), is planning to partner contract electronics manufacturer Foxconn to build its smart devices locally.

“We are working closely with Foxconn in this regard. Our idea is to have all our devices to be manufactured out of India in a couple of months from now. It, however, is up to Foxconn to decide on the location,” said Mahesh Lingareddy, Founder and Chairman of Smartron.

The startup, which counts cricketer Sachin Tendulkar as a strategic investor and brand ambassador, has been operating in a stealth mode since August 2014. It launched its first product tbook, a 12.2-inch Windows 10 2-in-1 hybrid computing device with prices starting Rs 39,999, in India last month.

Announcing the national launch of the company’s next flagship product, tphone, Lingareddy said Smartron would start exporting the smartphone to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries including Dubai and UAE, some African countries and Russia towards the end of next month.

tphone, which Lingareddy claims to be the country’s lightest 5.5-inch Android smartphone, is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.6-GHz octa-core processor coupled with 4GB RAM. The device bears 64GB of inbuilt storage with scope to expand to up to 128GB via a microSD card.

The smartphone, which sports a 13-MP rear shooter and a 4-MP front facing one, is priced at Rs 22,999, and will be available for registration on gadget360.com and smartron.com. It will be available on sale early June 2016.

Smartron, which saw an investment of $10 million since its inception, is looking at raising around $25 million to enhance technologies and expand its product offerings, he said, while declining to draw any time line for the same.

Stating that Smartron has an exciting set of products lined up for 2016, which will not be limited to the smartphone and laptop segments, Lingareddy said products including 14-inch ultrabook, 15.6-inch laptop, tband and twrap were under development. “All these will be IoT-ready,” he added.
