Hyderabad: City-based Shantha Biotechnics Ltd, an affiliate of Sanofi Pasteur, is in the process of setting up an insulin manufacturing plant with an investment of Rs 450 crore in the city. The vaccine maker on Tuesday announced that it had started commercial production at its new vaccine facility in the city on May 25.

“We expect production to commence at the upcoming insulin manufacturing facility in the year 2017,” K I Varaprasad Reddy, founder, Shantha Biotech, told media here on Tuesday. Reddy, who currently holds residual stake in Shantha Biotech, founded the company in 1993. Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccine division of global pharma giant Sanofi, acquired it from him in 2009.

On the new vaccine plant, Reddy said the company had invested close to Rs 250 crore on the facility located at Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Muppireddipalli near Hyderabad. Construction of the 19,000 square meter facility began in 2010 and it started production after receiving approvals from Indian regulatory authorities and also the World Health Organisation (WHO).

“We have acquired 50 acres of land at the SEZ and both the new facilities are located there. The investments into the two facilities are a part of Rs 5,500 crore outlay Sanofi had lined up here,” Reddy said. The company will produce 10 million doses of Shan5 vaccine at the new plant in the first year of operation before scaling up the capacity to 30 million doses.

Shan5 is a pediatric pentavalent vaccine that provides protection against five diseases in one shot. “Our mission is to develop, produce and market affordable vaccines. We are committed to providing our customers with the assurance of products that meet best-in-class international standards,” said Mahesh Bhalgat, Executive Director, Shantha Biotech.
