Aditya Birla Group-owned online fashion store Abof is set to launch an on-spot alteration service in Bengaluru and parts of Hyderabad.

This comes after the company conducted a two-month pilot programme in Bengaluru.

"The initiative will help us reduce returns and drive customer satisfaction for alteration. This is among the many value added services we provide to customers including a 3D trial room and on-spot exchange of apparel due to size issues," said COO Sukanta Das.

The company attributes 15-20% of its shipments to this service, which it currently provides for free to customers. Flipkart-owned fashion portal Myntra offers a similar service at a minimum cost of Rs 50 to customers while ethnic products marketplace Craftsvilla had started a similar service to get unstitched material stitched through its network of tailors.

"In Bengaluru we are partnering with YourTailor.in while in other cities we will partner with similar startups to power this through a vendor-partner relationship. After Hyderabad we plan to expand the service to Pune, Mumbai and Delhi-NCR," said Das. A fifth of the total returns pertain to size and fitting issues, he said.

The seven-month-old fashion portal delivers across 7,500 pincodes, with an average order size of about Rs 1,000.

India's online fashion and lifestyle market is expected to overtake consumer electronics by 2020, according to a report by Google India, and has seen marquee brands and traditional retailers enter the business.
