Hyderabad: The Telangana government has identified animation, visual effects and gaming Industry as a key growth engine for the next level of technology exports and employment generation, IT Minister KT Rama Rao said on Friday.

The State government has announced a host of incentives and subsidies to support the gaming and animation industry, which include capital investment subsidy, reimbursement of stamp duty, lease rental subsidy, reimbursement of production cost, recruitment assistance, entertainment tax exemption and market development assistance through exhibition subsidy, he added.

He also said that there were over 100 companies engaged in game development including VFX Studios, 2D, 3D Animation and Gaming employing about 30,000 professional in this segment.

Close to $500 million worth of content is developed out of Hyderabad,” he said. Nasscom, in its report ‘Mobile Gaming on the rise in India’ said mobile game downloads were expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (GAGR) of 58 per cent over the next five years going from 1.6 billion downloads in 2016 to an estimated 5.3 billion downloads in 2020.

As a result of growing adoption of games, the rapid proliferation of smartphones, affordable data and universal implementation of direct carrier billing, India presents an ideal opportunity for local and foreign mobile game publishers and investors, it said.

Earlier in the day, The Nasscom Gaming Forum, along with Deloitte, released a report ‘Applied games in India’ that discussed how the Indian market for applied games was expected to grow at a CAGR of 14-16 per cent, from $40 million in 2016, to $80 million in 2021.

Currently, across India, there are 40 developers of applied games (independent studios, IT firms venturing into applied games and e-learning companies), that operate out of Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and the NCR,” the report added.
