FMCG will continue to be a growth driver for Amazon India, which indicated it may include medicines as a new product category given greater legal clarity is in place.

"FMCG has grown by 165 per cent last year and 250 per cent in 18 months. All segments of Amazon are growing and I can say FMCG will continue to be important," Amazon India director category management FMCG, Saurabh Srivastava said today.

The company today announced the launch of Amazon Pantry that deals with 3500 everyday essentials. Currently, Amazon has pantry service in 29 cities, including Kolkata and will continue to expand in due course, he said. In the FMCG or consumables Amazon claimed it has 19 lakh products from 9000 sellers.

The global market place said it was testing Amazon Now in four cities which promises to deliver the order in two to four hours.

But Srivastava declined to give any time frame for bringing the sevice to Kolkata or expanding it in other cities. On adding medicine as a category in Amazon, Srivastava said, "Any category relevant to consumers is relevant for us. We are waiting for legal clarity on dealing with medicines on e-commerce platform."
