Hyderabad: State-run BSNL is expanding its Wi-Fi network across the State. As part of this, BSNL will enable 550 rural exchanges to offer Wi-Fi facility, according to a top official.

The telecom major is already providing Wi-Fi facility with high-speed internet at public places in the city. BSNL Telangana circle has commissioned the Wi-Fi services at all important locations/public places across the state. As of now, Wi-Fi services are available at 62 locations by BSNL, which in association with Quadgen, is offering free internet services at 275 locations additionally.

“50 rural exchanges have been equipped with Wi-Fi and 500 more are expected to be launched by December 2017 under USOF rural Project. Wi-Fi services are planned for all 1,000 rural exchanges under the USOF, by March 2018. Wi-Fi services are planned for all rural exchanges during this 2017-18 financial year,” BSNL Telangana Circle Chief General Manager L Anantharam told the media here on Monday.

Along Hyderabad Metro Rail Corridor, BSNL will set up 64 Base Transceiver Station (BTS) towers and out of this, eight sites have already been commissioned.

The commissioned sites are at Nagole, JNTU, Kukatpally, Bharat Nagar, Balanagar, Erragadda, ESI and SR Nagar.BSNL has recently received Best Wi-Fi Service Provider award and Leader Of the Year award at My India Wi-Fi India Summit.

On BSNL's latest 'Plan 429', which was launched recently, that provides unlimited voice and 1 GB data per day for 90 days for prepaid mobile services for Rs 429, he said since its launch there have been more than 8,000 activations under Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Circles and till date over 68,000 activations have been done.
