Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has kicked off a new cargo way connecting over ten ports. VPT officials on Tuesday flagged off vessel ‘MV CMA CGM VERDI’ (CIMEX2E Service as called by CMA-CGM) carrying over 1,300 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit measuring container usually a 20-feet long, 8 feet tall).

Commemorating the occasion, VPT chairman MT Krishna Babu exchanged plaque with the captain of the vessel. Speaking on the occasion, Krishna Babu said: “It’s a great occasion for Visakhapatnam Port, which now offers two main line services to China and Korea.”

VPT deputy chairman PL Harnadh, representatives from APL and CMA-CGM along with VCTPL officials were present on the occasion. Capt Aniruddha Lele, Head (India operations) and Cargoflow of CMA-CGM, also spoke.

The new service connects ports such as Visakhapatnam, Portklang, Singapore, Manila, Busan, Qingdao, Shanghai, Shekou Singapore, PortKlang and Chennai. “The service is one-of-its kind and gives direct connectivity between East Coast of India and Far East including South East Asia.

Now exporters of ferro alloys, heavy minerals, chemicals, aluminium, frozen sea food and other commodities have choices of two main line services from Visakhapatnam,” said Krishna Babu. The Ocean Alliance, a consortium comprising CMA-APL, TS Lines, Cosco Shipping, RCL and Simatech, is offering new cargo service. The consortium also commenced a China-India head haul service to Chennai named as FME service.
