Hyderabad: Dispelling apprehensions that artificial intelligence (AI) and automation would dry up employment opportunities, Prof J Narayana, Director, International Institute of Information Technology- Hyderabad (IIIT-Hyd) on Tuesday observed that AI and allied technologies would fuel next wave of technological developments after the internet and telecommunications, creating more jobs worldwide.

Citing a study by American research firm Gartner, he said AI, machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) between them would generate 2.5 million jobs worldwide within next three years. “There are some reports that AI and ML will lead to largescale job losses, which is totally untrue,” he told the media after unveiling a short-term course on artificial intelligence which the premier IT institute had launched in association with TalentSprint.

Dr Santanu Paul, co-founder and CEO, TalentSprint, said that AI would help in solving critical problems. “For instance, police in the US used AI to locate and kill a terrorist by placing a bomb in a vantage position. AI could be used in driverless cars, healthcare and several other areas,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the four-month programme on ‘Foundations of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning’ launched IIIT-H and TalentSprint will kick off in January next year.
