The average Indian actress loses her box office status when she is in her thirties or when she is married, whichever is before. Elsewhere at 40 actors begin to get great roles. Here they are nearly over and done. This is however no reason for death to snatch at them. Artistic utility or box office acceptance is not the defined shelf life of an artist. Yet death can be cruel and strike early. Here is a look at some great master who left early.

1. Divya Bharati (19Years): This was certainly premature. May be by self appointment but surely a tragedy not one was expecting in the wildest of dreams. She had worked with charm boy Rishi Kapoor and also delivered big hits with Rajeev Rai. Her career was distinctly screaming the upward swing when she slipped the multi-storeyed structure and left us all gasping.

2. SmitaPatil (31): In days of yore Indian women suffered poor medical attention and departed at child birth. Smita Patil was a sad reminder of that!! What talent and performance!! A genius at work who reminded us of how our sweetest songs tell our saddest tales. Cinema will always be poorer by her premature departure from planet earth. Who would not want to see her work alongside a Anuraag Kashyap, a Sanjay Leela Bansali , or any of the young talented brand.
3. Geeta Bali (35): Matrimony may have stolen this dynamo from the silver screen, but God willing ( and Shammi Kapoor ) consenting this great actor could well have had the paint back on her face if small pox had not stolen her fatally from us all. In fact she was doing Rajender Singh Bedi’s’Ekchaddar Maili Si’ at that point of time. It is a paradox that many years later her husband’s nephew came up with a great performance in the completed later version of the story.
4. Guru Dutt (39): The Orson Welles of our cinema died at the prime time of his career. Even if he had waited to complete his many aborted films he would have left behind a far greater filmography than he eventually did when he called it quits. He perhaps believed Badaljaye agar mallichamanhotanahi kali as the title song of his last incomplete film ‘Bararein Phir Bhi Ayegi’ would state, but surely there has not been since a a heart head, tech combo as this great film maker since he left us that October morning in 1964.
5. Meena Kumari (40): An actor par excellence. Nobody took tragedy with such ease. At a time when directors believed in the dramatic, she added subtlety to her repertoire in a manner that was uniquely hers and to this day unmatched. She danced herself to acceptance even in death with ‘Pakeezah’ and left that gasping gnawing vacuum that remains with an audience waiting: ‘Hum intezaar karenge’, ‘Qayamattak’…
6. Amjad Khan(40): To his question ‘Kitne aadmi the’: the answer could be three but he was one of a kind. The headline making Gabbar Singh was such a marvel of an actor and so much more to contribute not just as an actor but also blooming as a film maker till death did him away leaving behind an entire generation of fans complaining: ‘Dil ke thukde thukde karke muskurake chaldiye’.
7. KL Saigal (43): The original ‘Devdas’ of our cinema literally drank himself to death. Naushad tells the story of how the actor singer sincerely believed that it was liquor that added that quality to his magical singing till the master film musician proved otherwise. He held a unique position in the world of our music and there is no later ear play back singer who did not believe that he was the original master.
8. Madhubala (45): The Venus of our cinema, the original Anarkali whose on and off screen romance with the thespian is legendary. Born with a ventricular sepal defect, or 'hole in the heart, she left early but not before she ruled the hearts of her fans and the inspiration of her film makers. Considered one of the influence leaving stars of mainstream cinema, she is cult when it comes to beauty. Be it ‘Aaiye Meherebaanor’ ‘Ayega Aane Wala’ ‘Ek Ladki bheegi bagisi’ not to mention, ‘Mohe panghat pe Nandlal’ , this actor was the face of one important ingredient of our cinema: music.
9. Sanjeev Kumar (52): An actor who not only had the range but was willing to put his reputation behind his role. He never was worried to add grey to his head alongside his inches around his waist though!! The Thakkur in ‘Sholay’ is an etched montage of his talent, as is his ‘Mausam’. Well before that he was willing to take on the strong role from a script rather than the romantic lead. Unmarried but with a fraternity to grieve, he left when a lot of his talent remained yet to be tapped.
10. Nutan (54): Another genius before the camera who left too early. Yes she was being type cast as the mom in films like ‘Karma’ and ‘Mere Jung’ but she had also delivered ‘Mein Tulsi’ and ‘Sajan Ki Saheli’ and her career would well have had some more award winning performances but unfortunately carcinoma got the better of her. With the maximum number of popular awards and also a filmography with Bimal Roy films she sure had delivered some punch filled performances but left physically exhausted not artistically.
