From clicking a star-studded and record breaking selfie to ordering a pizza, the ever flamboyant Ellen DeGeneres brought humour, wit and charm to the Oscars when she returned as an emcee to Hollywood's biggest event.

The comedienne, 56, who returned as a host to the Oscars after seven years, kicked off the 86th Academy Awards in a shimmery blazer with a short and entertaining monologue.

The chat show host, who switched her costumes a couple of times, once even dazzled in a glitzy fairy outfit paired with a magical wand.

To mark the growing rage of selfie culture DeGeneres clicked a star-studded selfie with Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, DeGeneres, Kevin Spacey, Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong'o and her brother and Angelina Jolie (with her face half obscured), that instantly went viral.

Captioned, "If only Bradley's arm was longer. Best photoever. #Oscars," the selfie posted for DeGeneres Twitter account apparently became the most retweeted photograph ever on Sunday night. Previously, Barack Obama’s election-night photo of him embracing Michelle, which has been retweeted over 778,000 times, was the most-retweeted tweet of all time; it took less than an hour for Ellen’s to beat his record and hit over 1.2 million retweets on this photo.

The chat show host kept the elite audience amused with her constant lighthearted jabs, however, she made sure that her performance did not become overbearing.

In one of the jokes she referred to Lawrence's infamous fall at the last year's Oscars, saying, "Jennifer, by the way, I am not going to bring up what happened last year. It's embarrassing and people just talk about it and it's just, you know. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, last year, she fell on the way up. Tripped."

She also mentioned that Lawrence again tripped while leaving her car for the ceremony this year.
