For the first time in his near 15 years career, Puri Jagannadh is directing a script which he didn’t put pen to paper. Yes, we are talking about the director’s current movie with NTR, written by Vakkantam Vamsi. Put that to him, he says,
I will ask enthusiastic people to send me their scripts. If I like their ideas, I will ask them to come up with a full script. If they don’t, I can join forces with them in developing it

For the first time in his near 15 years career, Puri Jagannadh is directing a script which he didn’t put pen to paper. Yes, we are talking about the director’s current movie with NTR, written by Vakkantam Vamsi. Put that to him, he says, “I was to shoot my script with NTR to start with, but days before the film went on to floors, he asked me to listen to Vamsi’s idea. I paid attention to it and felt it was way good than my body of work. I’ve put my script on the backburner and sat on Vamsi’s script.”
While he is shooting the film on a brisk note to meet the release deadline of January 9, Puri has spaced some time to promote ‘Romeo’, starring his brother Sai Ram Shankar in the lead role. He is the story and dialogue writer of the film, directed by Gopi Ganesh, his protégé. Dubbing the film as a cute love story, he says, “I wrote the film about five years back. It is shot in Rome, Switzerland and Visakhapatnam. The specialty of the film is that it was shot with only 16 members. Compared to my first film, it looks ten times better.”
About the inspiration behind the film, he recalls, “While I was shooting for ‘Nenu Naa Rakshasi’, I visited a place called Verona in Italy. It’s the city of Romeo and Juliet. Lovers from all across the world visit it and pray to the Juliet statue. I drew inspiration from the practice and penned ‘Romeo’.”
The director, who shot to fame by making films on a shoe-string budget at the start of his career, is keen to make such films in the future. “After watching ‘Romeo’, I felt I should make such a film, at least for the sake of practice. As producers started paying me big bucks, I somewhere couldn’t find time to make them,” he chuckles, while adding, “Dasaru garu once said, ‘There will be a day when I don’t get the dates of big stars, so it’s better that I stay in touch with small films’. I took his words to heart.”
He continues further, “I’m planning to nurture new talent next year. I will make an announcement regarding this very shortly. I will ask enthusiastic people to send me their scripts. If I like their ideas, I will ask them to come up with a full script. If they don’t, I can join forces with them in developing it.”
Post NTR’s project, he will be directing Mahesh. The project has been pending for a long time. “The story is ready; since Mahesh is busy I couldn’t narrate it to him yet. I will be meeting him this week.”
