In his debut film ‘Gundello Godaari’ director Kumar Nagendra trod a different path and made a critically acclaimed film. His second film, ‘Joru’, which is in total contrast to that, is a slapstick comedy. Kumar’s new offering is pretty much a routine masala fare with all the staples, and hence, does not offer anything new to watch unlike his first film which seemed promising. Repeating Sundeep Kishan, Kumar has three pretty girls Raashi Khanna, Priya Banerjee and Sushma to keep him company besides Brahmanandam to provide the laughs and Sayaji Shinde and a whole lot of others.

Still from ‘Joru’

Sundeep (Sundeep Kishan) runs into Annapoorna (Raashi Khanna) on her way to Visakapatnam from the US when she is robbed of her belongings as she is going to meet her father Sadashivam (Sayaji Shinde), an MLA. Bhavani (Ajay) attacks them much to their surprise. By the time they reach Vizag there’s more in store. When they reach Vizag they get to know some startling facts from PK (Brahmanandam). There are two more Annapoornas who surface to add to some unnecessary confusion and enough twists and turns.

Kumar adopts a rather stereotypical approach in outlining the story within the formulaic pattern. He takes his time in building up the pace which is a tad slow to begin with but picks up as the film progresses. With all the numerous twists and turns, the film meanders in a rather tedious way towards the climax. The novelty Kumar showed in the first film is missing in this slapstick comedy which offers entertainment from the word go – but meaningless and senseless at times. Especially the sequences of the hero’s friend (Saptagiri) with the bear get on your nerves.

The saving grace of the film is the acting of Brahmanandam, Sundeep Kishan and Raashi Khanna. Sundeep’s comedy timing is good. He has blossomed into one of the fine actors of the younger lot. Raashi oozes enough glamour and acts well too. Hers is one of the substantial roles amongst the three heroines. The other two, Priya and Sushma were mere witnesses to proceedings. Ajay too has nothing much to do and his talent is certainly wasted in a non-descript role.

The production values of the film are good. The songs are choreographed and shot rather well – especially the one on the beach. On the whole, ‘Joru’ is a time-pass entertainer which can be seen if one is at a loose end and has nothing much to do. One certainly expected more from Kumar Nagendra.
