Chennai: Tamil Nadu police on Monday arrested a group of people belonging to a newly-formed organisation, Progressive Force of Tamil before they could demolish the statue of Telugu actor late Shoban Babu at centrally-located Mehata Nagar. Progressive Force had sent threatening statements cautioning the government and public to demolish all statues of non-Tamil leaders. They began with the statue of veteran Telugu actor.


On a tip-off from the intelligence department, police took action by arresting the activists before they reached the place. Many Telugu linguistic societies and fans of Shoban Babu expressed shock at the move and expressed solidarity with the late actor's family.


Those leaders who gathered at his residence to resist the move include Kethi Reddy Jagadeeswara Reddy of Tamil Nadu Telugu Yuvaskathi, Tanguttori Ramakrishna president of Telugu Sanghaala Samaikya Vedika and Ponnuri Ranganayakulu general secretary of South Indian Telugu Welfare Association.
